Just an eyewash

The Frontier Post

December 24, 2011

The US investigation in the fatal Salala attack is plainly just an eyewash. What else could it be, even if granted for argument’s sake, that it was an innocent human error that led up to the assault culminating into the slaughter of our at least 26 unsuspecting soldiers and the wounding of their over a dozen mates. Once the attack on our two border posts was instantly intimated to the US-led NATO command, the action should have ceased at once but stop it did not. It continued for nearly two hours uninterruptedly. What does it tell if not that this was a deliberate and preplanned aggression, which the shoddy work of investigation that a US general has done in the tragic episode can in no manner cover up?

Indeed, there was much foul to this act of aggression by the Afghanistan-based US forces right from the outset. Initially, they were in denial, not ready even to accept the responsibility. Rather, they propped up their Afghan stooges to blurt out the lie that it was from the Pakistani posts that firing started first and in retaliation drew firing from the forces in Afghanistan. More mischievously, the Afghan stooges asserted that the firing from the Pakistani side ensued as the coalition forces were engaged in action against the insurgents in Afghanistan. The intent of this vile assertion is too obvious. The idea was to create an impression that it was a covering fire in aid of the insurgents.

It really took the American command quite a time to realise the gravity and enormity of their thuggish assault. Still, they were palpably found dilly-dallying on it. Just a day’s questioning of the coalition forces’ officials concerned by the investigating US general could have been enough to know the facts. But they took almost a month to produce this half-baked investigative work.

Obviously, they were buying time, hoping for the dust to settle down and then come up with a perfunctory report as in the past, holding none from amongst them culpable and fixing no responsibilities for punitive action. It was the boiling outrage cutting across every segment of the Pakistani polity and the strong actions that the government took that lastly compelled them to hold an inquiry of sorts and own up the responsibility of the fatal assault.

But even now they are at once cagey and mean. The attack was a "mistake", they say. But this is a patent hogwash, hard even to touch, what to say of buying. Given the circumstances in which this act of thuggery was carried out, a mistake it definitely couldn’t be. By every reckoning, it was a deliberate preplanned naked aggression. And sorry they are, they say, but apologise they would not. Yes, such deceit comes natural to the American panjandrum, with all their arrogance and hubris that are their permanent traits. It is only the names with "John" or "James" that move their hearts and impel them to produce in volumes dirges and requiems. It is only their own whose distress or tragedies they mourn; others they take to be worms and vermin fit only to be crushed, not to weep or cry over, but at best to feign sorrow and shed one or two crocodile tears, if at all.

But those unsuspecting valiant Pakistani soldiers who fell prey to the US forces’ naked aggression on the Salala posts may not be bearing John or James in their names. They may not have been born in Texas or California. But they were our sons. And they were the sons of the soil. And their tragic slaughter has left every heart grieving in this land. The mothers mourn them. The sisters cry over their demise and gore. The brothers are angry and revengeful. And the fathers are spitefully cursing the perpetrators of this wanton carnage. Sorry here wouldn’t do. Not even an apology will be enough to atone for the sin that the US murderers in uniform have committed. Of course, they must compensate the aggrieved families, but not by way of compassion but as a punishment for their crime.

The people of Pakistan, however, will not be satisfied until this carnage’s perpetrators are brought to justice. And that demand of theirs has to be met at any rate. And the Islamabad establishment should not relent or sit at rest until that people’s wish is fully fulfilled.
