US courts a mockery of justice?

Truth About Iraqis

January 25, 2006

Pursuant to my earlier blog of today where I discussed the thievery and torture (murder) that have become common and nationally endorsed tactics in the US military, I want to highlight something about the US justice system when it comes to lesser beings i.e. Iraqis, blacks, indians, etc.

We looked in detail at the non-sentence the war criminal Welshofer received after murdering an Iraqi general. His comrades at torture had threatened the family of the general if he had not given himself up.

My bloggings on Welshofer: 1 and 2.

Welshofer received no jail sentence for killing a human being - purposefully.

However, a war protester received six months in jail for damaging a military recruiting center:

"You have obvious contempt for the laws of the U.S., and it bothers me," the judge, Thomas McAvoy of United States District Court, told the protester, Daniel J. Burns.

The crimes: In 2003, using methods more commonly seen in the Vietnam War era, Mr. Burns, who is now 45, and three other activists - Clare T. Grady, 47, her sister Teresa B. Grady, 40, and Peter J. De Mott, 59 - spilled vials of blood on the walls, windows and American flag of the recruiting center in Lansing, near Ithaca, to protest the impending invasion of Iraq, the NYT says.

What is the world to understand of this?
1) killing a human being is something not so frowned upon in the us, particularly if the being in question is non-American (Iraqi).
2) Speaking out against the Bush administration is punishable by wiretapping, jail, no-fly listing.
3) Democracy works in the US only if you nod your head and wave the flag. Dissent is intolerable.

Sigh. Come on America, wake up! You live in a global community and how you deal with international issues is crucial. Don't you care about the rest of the world?

Some do.

Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice, said if the tables were turned and an American general had fallen into enemy hands and suffered the same fate from interrogators, there would have been an uproar in the US. "How is this going to look overseas?" he said. More from Aljazeera.net.
...
"The biggest news of this verdict is, it's not news," Jumana Musa, advocacy director of Amnesty International, said of the Welshofer sentencing.

"It really follows the lines of other such cases: very little punishment for what would otherwise be thought of as very serious crimes."

Musa said such cases erode US credibility at a time when it is urging other countries to increase human-rights protections. She said they could also set human rights progress back by giving countries such as Libya an excuse to justify abuses
.

Exactly.

World politics are cyclical, what happens here affects what happens there and vice versa.

Impeach your warmongers and return to the embrace of peace-loving peoples.

Thanks to Global news matrix for the news tidbit.
