Israeli
occupation forces have continued their offensive on the Gaza Strip for the 33rd
consecutive day, excluding a number of humanitarian truces. Over the past 24 hours, Israeli forces have
continued to commit crimes in the Gaza Strip, including airstrikes that
targeted houses, civilian facilities, agricultural plots and open areas, and artillery
and artillery and sea shelling. As a
result of these attacks, 5 Palestinian civilians, including a child and a
woman, were killed, and 57 others, including 19 children and 9 women, were
wounded. An old woman also died from a
previous wound, and the body of a child was recovered from destroyed homes. PCHR's
field workers reported that thousands of Palestinian civilians came back to
UNRWA shelters once the truce expired.
They face very severe living conditions lacking basic services.
The
latest developments since the press release issued by PCHR on Saturday, 09
August 2014 have been as follows:
The Northern Gaza Strip:
Israeli forces launched 25 airstrikes and fired
a number of artillery shells targeting houses, agricultural plots and open
areas. As a result of these attacks, 37
Palestinians, including 13 children and 9 women, were wounded.
Israeli forces also targeted and destroyed 2 houses and damaged some
other ones.
The most significant attacks were as follows:
- At approximately 14:00 on Saturday, 09 August 2014, Israeli
tanks fired a number of shells at Um al-Nasser village. A shell hit a house belonging to Jum'a 'Eid
Abu Hashish. As a result, 6 members of
the family, including 2 children and 2 women, were wounded.
- At approximately 15:45, an Israeli drones fired 2 missiles at a
house belonging to Jalal 'Eid Abu 'Ouda in al-Nazzaza area in the east of Beit
Hanoun. The house was extensively
damaged, but no casualties were reported.
- At approximately 00:50 on Sunday, 10 August 2014, Israeli forces
fired a surface-to-surface missile at a 3-storey house belonging to Jamal
Yousef al-'Eila opposite to the office of the Internal Security Service in
Jabalya refugee camp. The missile penetrated
the roofs and made a hole in the ground floor.
As a result, 10 Palestinian civilians, including 4 children and 4 women,
were wounded, the wounds of 2 of them was described as critical.
Gaza City:
Israeli warplanes
launched 4 airstrikes and fired a number of shells that targeted houses, Gaza
fishing port and Ansar security complex, causing damage to them. Medical
crews also recovered the body of a child from al-Shuja'iya neighborhood.
The most significant attacks were as follows:
- At approximately 11:30 on Saturday, 09 August 2014, Israeli
warplanes launched 2 missiles at the buildings of training and medical services
in Ansar security complex in the west of Gaza City.
- At approximately 14:00, medical crews recovered the body of 'Othman
Ra'ed al-Jammal, 11, who was killed by Israeli shelling that targeted
al-Shuja'iya neighborhood in the east of Gaza City on 20 July 2014.
- At approximately 20:00, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a
house belonging to Mohammed Mustafa al-Hawajri, in which 15 people live, in
Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in the north of Gaza City. The house was partially destroyed.
- At approximately 00:10 on
Sunday, 10 August 2014, an Israeli warplane bombarded a 3-storey house
belonging to the heirs of Jamal 'Abdul Karim 'Ammar, in which 40 people live,
in Ahmed Yassin Stree opposite to Erhim Company. The house and a subordinate 100-square-meter
barrack were destroyed.
- At approximately 00:15, Israeli gunboats shelled Gaza fishing
port. As a results rooms of fishermen
were damaged.
The Central Gaza Strip:
Israeli warplanes launched 3 airstrikes
targeting 2 houses, a motorbike and a mosque.
As a result of these attacks, a Palestinian civilian was killed and 5
others were wounded. Israeli warplanes destroyed 2 houses and a mosque. Additionally, an old woman died of a previous
wound.
The most significant attacks were as follows:
- On Saturday morning, 09 August
2014, medical sources declared that Zainab Yousef Zaqqout, 77, died of a
previous wound she has sustained when Israeli was planed bombarded a house
belonging to the al-Bayoumi family in al-Nussairat refugee camp on 31 July 2014.
- At approximately 18:20, Israeli
drone fired 3 missiles at a 2-storey house belonging to 'Adnan Hassan al-Faqi,
in which 33 people live, in al-Nussairat refugee camp. The house was destroyed.
- At approximately 21:20, an Israeli
drone fired a missile at a motorbike in Deir al-Balah. The rider, Mahmoud Mohammed al-Jourani, 32,
was killed.
- At approximately 02:20 on Sunday,
10 August 2014, an Israeli drone fired a missile at al-Shuhada Mosque in
al-Nussairat refugee camp. Soon after,
an Israeli warplane launched a missile at the mosque and destroyed it. A number of nearby houses were damaged and 3
Palestinian civilians were wounded.
Khan Yunis:
Israeli warplanes launched 8 airstrikes
targeting Palestinian civilians, a motorbike, agricultural plots and a site of
a Palestinian armed group in Khan Yunis.
Israeli tanks also shelled the eastern areas of Kahn Yunis. As a result of these attacks, a Palestinian
woman was killed and her husband and another 6 civilians were wounded. Israeli warplanes targeted 3 houses and
destroyed one of them.
The most significant attacks were as follows:
- At
approximately 10:00 on Saturday, 09 August 2014, Israeli warplanes launched 2
missiles at Canada wedding hall at Saladin Street in the south of Khan Yunis,
causing damages.
- At
approximately 11:00, Israeli warplanes launched 3 missiles at Hajj Mohammed
Pool area near the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel to the southeast of
Khuza'a village. The attack caused some
damages, but no casualties were reported.
- At
approximately 11:30, an Israeli drone fired 2 missiles at a 3-storey house
belonging to Salem Fayez Ma'rouf in Jourat al-Lout area in the south of Khan
Yunis. A few minutes later, an Israeli
warplane launched a missile at the house and destroyed it.
- At
approximately 17:30, an Israeli drone fired 2 missiles at a 4-storey house
belonging to Mousa al-Qedra in al-Amal neighborhood in the west of Khan Yunis. The house was damaged and fire broke out in
the upper floor. Five Palestinian
civilians were wounded.
- At
approximately 02:10 on Sunday, 10 August 2014, an Israeli warplane launched a
missile at an open area in the west of Khan Yunis. No casualties were reported.
- At
approximately 04:30, an Israeli warplane launched a missile at a house
belonging to Ayman Salman Baraka, 38, in which 6 people live, in Bani Suhaila
village, east of Khan Yunis. As a result, Baraka's wife, Amanai al-'Abed
Baraka, 35, was killed, and he himself was seriously wounded.
- At
approximately 07:40, an Israeli warplane launched a missile at a site of a
Palestinian armed group in the northwest of Khan Yunis. No casualties were reported.
- At
approximately 07:55, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a number of houses
belonging to the 'Abdul Ghafour family in al-Qarara village, after phoning a
resident of the area ordering evacuation of those houses. Dozens of families left their houses.
Rafah:
Israeli warplanes launched 13 airstrikes on
Rafah targeting houses, agricultural plots and open areas. As a result of these attacks, 3 Palestinian
civilians, including a child, were killed, and 8 others, including 6 children,
were wounded. Israeli warplanes targeted
and destroyed 4 houses.
The most significant attacks were as follows:
- At
approximately 10:10 on Saturday, 09 August 2014, an Israeli drone fired a
missile at a 2-storey house belonging to Khaled al-Ja'bari, in which 27 people
live, in Tal al-Sultan neighborhood in the west of Rafah.
- At
approximately 14:05, an Israeli drone fired 2 missiles at a house belonging to
Ussama Duhair, in which 13 people live, in Kherbat al-'Adas in the north of
Rafah. A few minutes later, an Israeli
warplane launched a missile at the house and destroyed it. A number of nearby houses were damaged.
- At approximately
19:45, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a taxi in Qishta neighborhood in the
south of Rafah. As a result, Saeed
'Aatef Timraz, 26, and Mohammed Tamer 'Aadel al-'Aaidi, 28, who were traveling
in the taxi, were killed.
- At
approximately 21:00, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a house belonging to
Hassan al-Nahhal, in which 15 people live, in Kherbat al-'Adas neighborhood in
the north of Rafah. A few minutes later,
an Israeli warplane launched a missile at the house and destroyed it. Three nearby houses were also destroyed, and
number of others were damaged.
- At
approximately 22:55, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a house belonging to
Anwar Khalil al-Sha'er, in which 14 people live, in Kherbat al-'Adas
neighborhood in the north of Rafah. The
house was partially destroyed and al-Sha'er's child, Aya, 13, was killed.
- At
approximately 01:50 on Sunday, 10 August 2014, an Israeli warplane launched a
missile at an agricultural plot in the east of Rafah.
- At approximately
07:10, an Israeli warplane launched a missile at a tunnel near Saladin Gate on
the Egyptian border, south of Rafah.
- At
approximately 07:20, an Israeli warplane launched a missile a tunnel near
Saladin Gate on the Egyptian border, south of Rafah.
PCHR reiterates condemnation, expresses
utmost concern for these crimes, and:
1) Calls upon the
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to promptly visit the Gaza Strip, to
fulfill her responsibilities to stop this barbaric offensive and to closely
watch the systematic destruction caused and deliberate targeting of Palestinian
civilians and property protected under the international law;
2) Calls upon the
UN Human Rights Council to accelerate the formation of the fact-finding mission
as decided by the Council in the resolution taken in its special session that
was held on 23 July 2014 to investigate violations of international
humanitarian law and human rights law in the occupied Palestinian territory
without any delay related to bureaucratic restrictions and procedures;
3) Calls upon the
High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to fulfill their
contractual obligations not only to respect the Convention, but also ensure
respect for the Convention, and to immediately intervene to stop war crimes
committed by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians, and calls upon the
Swiss Government, the depository of the Geneva Conventions, to call for a new
conference of the High Contracting Parties as soon as possible;
4) Stresses that
holding war criminals accountable is an essential condition for any future
settlement, and the international community should confirm that no impunity for
war criminals, and the achievement of peace is conditioned by respect for human
rights and the international law, and prosecution of war criminals;
5) Calls upon the
Palestinian leadership to immediately accede to the Rome Statute of the
International Criminal Court, which will provide opportunities to prosecute
Israeli war criminals before the Court;
6) Stresses that
the Gaza Strip is a disaster area and there is an urgent need to treat the
disastrous humanitarian situation resulting from deliberate Israeli attacks on
the civilian infrastructure, including electricity, water, hospitals, shelters
and houses, forcible displacement of more than 500,000 civilians ad systematic
and mass destruction of civilian communities;
7) Calls upon the
international community to intervene to stop the policies of collective
punishment and left the closure imposed on the Gaza Strip for more than seven
years, allowing the freedom of movement and goods, away from artificial
improvements which have contributed to institutionalizing and prolonging the
closure.
