Arturo Rosales reminds us to refresh our memories and remember the LIES …
We are now about a fifth of the way through Obama’s first 100 days. The great expectations of the campaign have already begun to slip as the last poll on Obama’s popularity has receded from 76% to 61%. This is hardly surprising when you consider the state of the country and the remains of the American Dream in tatters. As soon as Obama started to take decisions, his popularity suffered.
Looking back to 2000 and 2001 leading up to 9/11 the Bush presidency was pretty stable up to that point but lurking in the background was the Project for a New American Century which had to be implemented at all costs. These costs included lying in a concerted manner by all the major politicians in the Bush administration in order to justify the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.
This YouTube video will refresh all our memories so that we remember the LIES . Take a walk down memory lane, dear readers and ask yourself what has changed.
Let’s now return to the present. Somehow, people want to believe that the lies of the Bush era have ended with the advent of Barack Obama. This time around, Obama's Democrat Administration promises:
-
to close Guatanamo, only to send these prisoners of war to other prisons and torture camps abroad;
-
to withdraw US troops from Iraq, only to send them to Afghanistan and Pakistan;
-
to "save or create 3.5 million jobs" in the next 2 years" - pretty safe promise. How does one measure success. What does it mean to "save a job"?; According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, nonfarm payroll employment lost 598,000 jobs in January, 2009 alone. In the same month, the unemployment rate rose from 7.2 to 7.6 percent. Payroll employment has declined by 3.6 million in 2008. About one-half of this decline occurred in the last quarter of 2008). In January, 2009 job losses were large and widespread across nearly all major industry sectors.
-
a "commitment to comprehensive health care reform – a down-payment on the principle that we must have quality, affordable health care for every American" (a commitment? ... a down payment? ... on the principle of affordable health care? - and he promises it will all be done by private corporations. - a lullaby, sung to the public to tuck everyone in for another night's sleep.)
-
to "seek a cure for cancer in our time" ... of course we've never heard that before. It's been a favorite promise of every president since in his State of the Union speech about 40 years ago when Richard Nixon said: "I will also ask for an appropriation of an extra $100 million to launch an intensive campaign to find a cure for cancer, and I will ask later for whatever additional funds can effectively be used. The time has come in America when the same kind of concentrated effort that split the atom and took man to the moon should be turned toward conquering this dread disease. Let us make a total national commitment to achieve this goal."
-
to give the U.S. the "highest proportion of college graduates in the world" - again, the results will be nearly impossible to prove one way or the other. Even now, it's very difficult to find how the US ranks with other nations in college enrollment and graduation. Facts: Obama said that the U.S. has "one of the highest high school dropout rates of any industrialized nation" and "half of the students who begin college never finish". Our research shows that only 15% of U.S. high school graduates ever graduate from college and less than 20% of students entering U.S. colleges actually graduate based on a survey of 50 colleges across the country.
-
to save the economy which means saving the banks; to cut the national deficit in half by the end of Obama’s first 4 years in office. Many analysts view this promise to be totally unrealistic (see "The Economy", below)
So on and on and on the promises flowed from Obama's lips and silver tongue.
-
In a grand finale, Obama cried,
"Finally, because we’re also suffering from a deficit of trust, I am committed to restoring a sense of honesty and accountability to our budget. That is why this budget looks ahead ten years and accounts for spending that was left out under the old rules – and for the first time, that includes the full cost of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. For seven years, we have been a nation at war. No longer will we hide its price."
-
and finally, Obama's Big Kahuna:
"And with our friends and allies, we will forge a new and comprehensive strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan to defeat al Qaeda and combat extremism. Because I will not allow terrorists to plot against the American people from safe havens half a world away."
Can anyone reasonably distinguish these words from the same old Bush lies that told us that the brown people are plotting to kill us all, thus justifying the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq? This bald lie simply seeks to reinforce Obama's massive demand for $663.7 billion dollars for the military in FY2010 and to justify more theft, killing and war in other peoples' lands. Almost laughably, the corporate media cheerleads Obama's new military budget by describing it "a modest 1.5 percent on 2009". They praise him for dropping the cost of Afghan/Iraq wars to $130 billion dollars, $11.4 billion less than 2009 and for his promise to drop the cost of these wars to "about 50 billion dollars annually in the next several years". With exactly the same neocon regime that created the Clinton and Bush wars, now formulating Obama's war policies, exactly what has "changed"?
The Economy
The task facing the Obama administration is much greater than the task facing the Bush invasion plans. Why? Simply because the situation in the economy has gotten completely out of hand and the contagion from the greed and avarice of the Wall Street bankers has triggered a world wide financial crisis.
Not even with orchestrated bail-out plans between the US, Europe, Japan and even China have been able to stem the meltdown of the stock markets, restore confidence or even encourage politicians or economists to make any headway after five months of massive blood-letting on all economic fronts.
This virus injected into the financial system by the US banks is the economic equivalent of the AIDS pandemic, for which there is no cure, just palliatives to keep the patient alive.
This being the case there is little doubt that the Obama administration already began to lie to the people in his February 24 feel-good speech to a joint-session of congress and the people. He made promises that he himself knows he cannot keep. He can read the trajectory of the U.S. economy and the facts of the global economic collapse like anyone else. These things are said not only in attempt to restore confidence in consumers and the economy, but also in the political system of the US itself. This rhetoric may postpone the inevitable but cannot erase the proverbial handwriting on the wall. The closest he came to the truth was with his statement, "You see, the flow of credit is the lifeblood of our economy." Aside from truth and absurdity of the comment, the underlying, deceptive subtext is that more credit and more debt will rescue an economy which has already collapsed under the weight of massive individual and corporate indebtedness. But note, Obama promised to cut the national deficit in half during his first term in office. Take a look -
The New York Times reports:
"Mr. Obama starts off from a stunning deficit for 2009 that is projected to reach $1.75 trillion when the fiscal year ends Sept. 30, or nearly four times last year’s shortfall. That would represent 12.3 percent of the gross domestic product, a deficit level that is larger than any since the end of World War II.
"By the last year of his term, in the 2013 fiscal year, Mr. Obama projects a deficit of $533 billion, or 3 percent of the overall economy, a level that economists consider sustainable. Even so, he foresees the level of the nation’s debt held by the public rising from 58.7 percent in the current year to 67.2 percent in a decade, a level not seen since 1951."
Fortifying Against Civil Unrest
As the people in the United States awaken to the lies and broken promises of their government - as they lose more and more patience, money, jobs, houses and food, more lies will be necessary as the threat of civil unrest grows. The future of the people in the U.S. lies in their own hands, just as our future lies in our own hands here in Venezuela.
After rioting in Greece, Russia, France, Iceland and several Eastern European states, western governments know that the writing is on the wall. Today CNN reported that police forces in the UK are expecting a long hot summer of discontent. Obama’s "stimulus package" will hire 50,000 more police in the US and proposes $26.7 Billion for the Dept. of Justice for law enforcement.
The US is prepared for this eventuality, or should I say probability. The 1878 Posse Comitatus Law, which prevents the government of turn from using troops to patrol civilian areas, is effectively dead and buried . We do not want to go into the issue of FEMA internment camps at this point but take the time to Google it and you can get a good idea of what is in store when hunger riots start.
Conclusion
Now, how many lies will the Obama administration have to invent to cover their tracks in an attempt to stop the fabric of US society imploding, following the example of the financial system?
Your guess is as good as mine but rest assured that there will not be any trillion dollar bail out of the population, since we are all expendable in the eyes of the neocons and the Illuminati bankers* wherever you live and whoever you are.
On the morning of February 27, 1989 the people rose up after President Carlos Andrés Pérez broke his campaign promises to support a socialist program. When Pérez privatised state companies and supported neoliberal policies he double-crossed the people who put him in office and they knew it. Petrol prices rose by 100%, the cost of public transportation by 30%, inflation and food and housing became unaffordable for millions. The rebellion spread across the country, the government declared a state of emergency, suspended the constitution, invoked martial law and government police and military attacked the people resulting in a death toll of about 3,000. The beauty of the Bolivarian Revolution today was bought at a price. Today, on the 20th anniversary of the Caracazo, we remember and celebrate our own courage and sacrifice in 1989 and we remind our children of the day that we brought a lying and corrupt government - 40 years running - to its end and ushered in a new and brilliant future for them.
May it be the same, 20 years from now for you, the people of the United States. Question every statement made by the Administration concerning the solution to the financial crisis. Think the opposite of what you are told on CNN, Fox, ABC, NBC and the corporate press and you will be able to spot the lies now. Do it before someone has to concentrate it in a YouTube video in eight years time when Obama finishes his second term! Above all, realise that the only power you have lies not in the government, but in your own hands.
