End the Division on 15 March: Demonstrate for Palestinian Solidarity

Tania Kepler

AIC, March 14, 2011

On 15 March, Palestine solidarity demonstrations are scheduled for cities in Gaza, the West Bank, and around the world to "End the Division" of Palestinian political parties and call for new elections and reform of the electoral system.

These protests, organized under the banner of national unity and reconciliation, are being organized by the Gaza youth movement "Gaza Youth Breaks Out" and the Palestinian youth movement "Palestine for Us".

"We emphasize that resolving the predicament of Palestinian disunity must be based on principles and values agreed upon by the Palestinian people regardless of their political affiliation. The first of these principles is the illegitimacy of imprisoning people based on their political beliefs. Consequently, we demand the release of all political prisoners held by the government in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank," wrote Palestine for Us.

The group Gaza Youth Breaks Out (GYBO) is a grassroots non-aligned movement, led by a core group of individuals who remain anonymous for security purposes. The Gaza group coordinates with students in the West Bank and has been in contact with Palestinians and pro-Palestinian groups around the world.

GYBO first made headlines last year when they published an impassioned manifesto, endorsed by over 20,000 Gaza youth, expressing frustration with life and politics born of Hamas's violent crackdowns on 'western decadence', the destruction wreaked by Israel's attacks and the political games played by Fatah and the UN, reported OpEdNews.

Organizers of the March 15th demonstrations are demanding full democratic representation for Palestinians all over the world, which include Democratic Palestinian National Council (PNC)elections that would guarantee equal representation for all Palestinians around the world (Gaza Strip, West Bank, 48 territories, refugee camps, and in the Diaspora).

According to the event planners, Palestinian political parties, Hamas’ government in Gaza, Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank, and a plethora of nongovernmental organizations are seeking to co-opt this movement to serve their narrow interests.

The March 15th movement is independent of any political party or institutional backing. It is being organized by non-partisan youth groups "who dream of a better future for their people."

"We invite all Palestinians, and particularly Palestinian youth, to come down to the street on March 15th. We will only carry Palestinian flags, and chant and sing for freedom, unity, and justice. March 15th shall be the day we stand in unity to demand democratic representation for all Palestinians as an affirmative step in our struggle for Freedom from Israeli Apartheid."

According to the organizers, March 15th demonstrations and Palestinians all over the world will be calling to:

1. End the Oslo Agreements
2. Dissolve the Palestinian Authority, particularly the role of the PA in security cooperation with Israel
3. National unity and reconciliation based on rebuilding the Palestine Liberation Organization
4. Full democratic representation of Palestinians all over the world and democratic PNC elections
5. Release of Palestinians imprisoned due to their political affiliations

Demonstrations have been organized to begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 15 in Palestine and according to the organizers, will 'continue until the achievement of all goals'.

Gathering places, to date, include: Gaza - the Unknown Soldier Square; Ramallah - Manara Square; Tulkarm - Roundabout Gamal Abdel Nasser; Jenin - complex of garages near the old Cinema Jenin; Hebron - in front of the governor's office; Bethlehem - Church of the Nativity Square; Nablus - Martyrs Square; Jordan and Lebanon: to be announced.

Gaza Youth Breaks Out March 15th demonstration organizers are also calling for solidarity events world-wide in front of Palestinian embassies in coordination with the Palestinian communities abroad.
