Bolivar attends the Anti-war Protest in Washington

A personal testament of the September 24th Anti-war march

By Les Blough

The people in the United States are angry. They are angry with their government for killing over 100,000 Iraqi people in their name. They are angry with a government who has sent at least 1900 U.S. soldiers to early graves and 15,000 to hospitals in a war made for corporate profit. They are angry with their politicians who have attacked people in other countries without mercy and failed to protect their own people from poverty, disease and national disasters like Hurricane Katrina. On September 24, 2005, the people rose up with a show of force - 300,000 strong – without equal since the U.S. war on the people of Vietnam. All day, for more than 5 hours, they filled the breadth of Pennsylvania Avenue, marching past the front gate of the White House. They delivered a clear message to the U.S. government and the neoconservative killers who planned the war in Iraq and engineer the poverty and oppression at home.

As the protestors filed past the front doorstep of the White House they observed a father and daughter holding up a placard with a large photograph of President Hugo Chavez Frias. Their reaction to that photograph stated as much as any of the angry anti-war chants, street theater and protest banners. Les Blough, editor of Boston-based Axis of Logic and his daughter Lisa Podolski held up photographs of President Chavez with words from his recent speech to the United Nations beneath:

"Now is the time to not allow our hands to be idle or our souls to rest until we save humanity." - President Hugo Chavez Frias

They responded to the photograph of Chavez with passionate words of praise. They know that since 1998, Chavez has been an example of national leadership, morality, justice and compassion – the voice of the people. There could not have been a more powerful condemnation of the Bush regime than the people’s spontaneous reaction to a photograph of this one they failed to overthrow. There could have been no greater insult to President Bush than for this praise of the national leader who has become the Nelson Mandela of the Western Hemisphere, respected throughout the world.

While in Washington on September 24, my handwritten notes recorded the event:

"One by one – massive contingents from many states, organizations and hundreds of thousands of individuals, families and children filed past the White House. The crowd’s reaction to the photo of Chavez sounded like one coming from Bolivarians in front of Miraflores Palace. Seeing the photograph of President Chavez, marchers continuously paid tribute to their Latin American hero and lined up to take photos of the poster. Many responded with smiles, fists raised in the air and chanting "Cha-Vez!, Cha-Vez!, Cha-Vez!" The poster was surely the most photographed of the day. Protestors cried out, "We need a president like him!", "He’s the Man!" and "Viva Chavez!"

As the people paused at the gate of the White House their anger hung in the air like a stalled tornado beneath the overcast Washington sky. The people know that there will be no turning back. Their knowledge of the truth about the Iraq war and the government’s terrible treatment of the Hurricane victims in Southern United States will remain. It was spirit of the people that carried them past the White House. It will continue to grow until the corrupt and murderous corporate government in Washington has been brought to justice. There is also a growing awareness among the people of the United States that the hard times that have befallen us will only become more difficult. The people will survive those difficulties – no matter how harsh – but the regime that has delivered death and misery throughout the world for so many years will not survive and will be known by history for their massive crimes against all humanity.
