Appeal for help and information (especially former service members who were in Iraq)
Feral Scholar
 |
January 1, 2006
We are appealing to you for your help in finding out what really happened to Fred NERAC in Iraq on the 22nd of March 2003. He is the first journalist to go missing in Iraq, part of an ITN crew of four. Two were shot dead - Terry LLOYD, a senior ITN reporter and Hussein OTHMAN their "fixer". The fourth person was Daniel DEMOUSTIER, a Belgian cameraman, who survived. Fred NERAC is a French journalist living in Belgium and working for a British television channel.
Five investigations to date have yielded no further material evidence of
what became of Fred NERAC after the 22nd of March 2003. These are:
- ITN enquiries made in March and April 2003 by AKE, a company specialising
in conflict situations
- the "factual" American MILITARY official report,
- the British MILITARY one from June 2003 to September 2004,
- the Danish MILITARY one,
- and the "still to be completed" official French one from January 2005 till
now (the first conclusions were made in October 2005).
So far Mrs Nerac has had no access to those official reports, apart from the
ITN and American ones. She has only received a short summary of the British
report. The French authorities did not receive it either but were allowed to
consult parts of it for the purposes of their own investigation.
IN THE US REPORT THE TESTIMONIES OF THE MARINES ARE ALL THE SAME: THEY JUST SAW CARS COMING TOWARDS THEM, THOUGHT THEY WERE SUICIDE BOMBERS AND OPENED FIRE. IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT NONE OF THEM CAN BE MORE PRECISE. THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN DISCOURAGED FROM TELLING THE TRUTH OR FROM PROVIDING MORE DETAILS ABOUT THIS INCIDENT BY THEIR COMMANDING OFFICERS.
We want to know Why there is so little information. What happened that
people are unwilling to talk about?
Why can’t Mrs Nérac get a copy of the British report?
We think there are still many unanswered questions. The American authorities
seem very reluctant to cooperate with the British and French authorities.
As many troops were there that day, might there be some ex-marines who
would/could talk now ?
IN THE LIGHT OF THE ABOVE, WE THINK WE MIGHT LEARN MORE FROM SPEAKING TO THE MARINES INDIVIDUALLY, IN A NON-MILITARY CONTEXT (SOME MARINES MAY HAVE LEFT, HAVE RETURNED TO CIVILIAN LIFE ETC…).
Below, there is some factual information about this case. It’s a copy
of Fabienne Nérac’s mail to Jimmy Massey, an ex-marine. He could not help us
as he knew nobody from this division.
With many thanks
On behalf of the Fred Nerac Committee,
Catherine Jacmin

Information sent to Jimmy Massey.
On Saturday March 22 2003, they had entered in Iraq from Kuwait in direction of Basra. The team consisted in Terry LLOYD, a veteran ITN correspondent, Daniel DEMOUSTIER , a Belgian cameraman, Fred NERAC, a French cameraman and Hussein OTHMAN, a Lebanese translator .
The team had spent the night of the 21-22 March camping near British
positions on the Iraqi side of the border with Kuwait and, after filing a
despatch on the previous days’s events, they headed towards Basra .
It seems that they passed through several checkpoints on their way north,
bypassing Az Zubayr and heading toward the Az Zubayr bridge south of Basra,
known to the coalition military as Bridge nr 4.
Daniel and Terry where in the lead vehicle (ITN 1, Daniel driving ) and
Fred and Hussein in the second car ( Hussein driving , ITN 2). The cars
where two white Mitsubishi Pajero with
Kuwaiti plates and big TV markings on the sides and on the roof.
About 200 m short of the Bridge Nr 4 , ITN1 saw an Iraqi pick-up and some
Iraqui on foot coming over the bridge. ITN 1 did a U-turn and headed
back south of Basra in the direction of Koweit. ITN 2 tried to do the same
but appears to have been stopped by the Iraqis nearby the bridge ..
ITN 1 said they stopped and waited, watching ITN 2 in the wing mirror from
about 200 meters away, urging them to set off again.
Eventually ITN 2 car began moving again and ITN 1 set off too, driving at
speeds of up 100 kph. Survivor of ITN 1 said that a vehicle containing four
Iraqui officiers came alongside, with them indicating he should pull over (
later we got the testimony that they wanted to stop them) and he did not .
Suddenly heavy gunfire broke out . ITN 1 believed it was coming from four
American tanks on the right hand side.
Bullets were hitting the car, the driver fell into the footwell and the car
careered off the road. Driver looked to his right and the journalist Terry
LLOYD wasn’t there anymore.
In total there were four vehicles heading towards South in the direction of
the US Marines (ITN1 followed by Iraqui pick-up with machine gun and ITN2
and a fourth one with Iraquis officers which turned back to Basra when the
shots started).
ITN 1 car came to rest about 200 m from the American tanks. ITN 1 survivor
said how he hid there for up to an hour, with gunfire coming his way
every time he tried to move. He saw an ambulance and pull up and take away
some people; he thought he saw Fred on the road but wasn’t sure. He
eventually flagged down the car of a British Newspaper journalist and he was
taken away to the Kuwaiti border .
It seems that Terry was trying to walk into a civilian minibus but the US
opened fire again on the minibus and he received a fatal wound from a US
tracer bullet . He arrived at the Basra Hospital dead .
There has been no reliable sightings of Fred and Hussein. Since then Fred
NÈrac is missing and Fabienne Nérac searching him .
The informations about the US Cy there at that time :
Captain Greg Poland, the Company Commander of Delta Company, 1ST Tank
Battalion, 1st Marine Division,1 MEF was in charge of the US tank unit
involved in the shooting incident. Captain Poland was in a side position
commanding the 4 tanks.
There were other units either side of their boundary: 3 Battalion 4th
Marines covered the area of Az Zubayr to the east , 3rd Battalion 7th
Marines covered the area to the west . Both 3/4 and 3/7 were not involved in
the shooting.
In Delta Company the three platoons include Red Platoon, whose four tanks
fired on position. WHITE Platoon who joined them later, and BLUE Platoon who
were only on the scene much later in the day .
One Gunner had a 10 x magnification sight. He said he saw one of the Iraqis
get out of the white pick-up truck, talk to the occupants of a vehicle
which was probably Fred’s , return to the white pick-up, load an AK47 and
put on a gas mask.
The all three vehicles proceeded towards the tanks at the same speed ,
approx 60 miles/hour. The white truck with a machine gun shot out the
windscreen of the lead vehicle ( ITN 1)which then caught fire .The second
vehicle stopped and its occupants bailed out. No one saw a journalist or
anyone with hands up . The people on the road were either looking for cover
or returning fire.
Captain Poland said they believed the ITN cars came from Basra with suicide
bombers. They believed the TV cars contained armed Iraqi personnel and that
these cars could have been stolen. At no time before the firing did they
believe these were genuine TV cars. They thought the group of 3 cars ( 2 TV
cars and the white pick up) were one unit which stopped 1000 meters away and
then proceeded towards them at the same speed, about 60 mph.
They said didn’t get closer to the ITN vehicles and remained in their
position 300-500 m avay until sundown, Fred’s car remained there all day.
They left after briefing and handing over the situation to the Royal
Fusilliers ( British forces).
They didn’t sweep the scene for dead nor wounded. They didn’t see the Two
ITN vehicles going up the road towards Basra, before the incident .They used
7.62mm and 0.50 HMG ordonnance.
Jimmy if I tell you all this is because, I am still searching for truth
about my husband and you might be able to help me .
I don’t blame anybody I just want to know if somebody might have seen
something relevant about my husband.
I am trying to get in contact with the Marines of this Battalion without
great success . How can I know where they are, if they
have left the Army and if they are free to speak ?
Do you know any trustfull Marines from this Division ? I am sure they
remember March 22nd as this was second day of the war and one of the fierce
battles. Captain Poland later said to a journalist who wanted to question
his men about the incident, that he preferred not because most of them are
not sleeping well anymore since they happened to know they had fired on
journalists .
I do not want to accuse anybody, I just need to bring my husband back .
For sure, my husband’s car (ITN 2) has been stopped at the bridge by the
Iraquies . What happened there ? Could one of the Marines in the tanks have
clearly seen the scene and after the shooting, don’t you think that there might
be some Marines who took pictures ?
For my children , my parents in law, my sisters in law and myself knowing
that Fred is still in Iraq, possibly buried
somewhere is hard to live with. We are looking for a proof, a witnessing of
what happened to him, anything that can help us to achieve our moaning .
I know Iraq has been hard times to all of you and all of us, it is time now
to share all this don’t you think ?
Hope you’ll come back to me with some good ideas / infos for me .
I wish you all the best .
