"War of mosques" erupts in Iraq

Truth about Iraqis

February 23, 2006

Arab media sources have called yesterday's events in Iraq a "War of Mosques".

Perhaps this may shed light on 1) the devastating and criminal act against the Askariya Mosque in Sammara, and 2) the criminal attacks on some 113 Sunni Mosques throughout Iraq.

However, this war - except for the Askariya tragedy - has been pretty much one sided from the outset.

Calling it a war is therefore a misnomer.

I am hearing that a nationwide curfew has been imposed on the country by the Ministries of Defense and Interior in hopes of regaining control of the situation.

That's a farce.

First off, Sistani's call for calm was decptive. He called on the Shia to protest, but maintain restraint.

Can you imagine people fuming with anger protesting? How likely is it they will be restrained? Not likely.

And they protested all the way to the gatherings to hear Muqtada Sadr's spokespersons fan the flames of civil war.

Sadr returned from a trip to Jordan to call for revenge.

According to people I have spoken to in Iraq, it is Sadr's people that are causing most of the violence and fight pitch battles with Sunnis.

Sunni politicians answered Sadr's call for revenge with more revenge. Tit for tat. Welcome to Bosnia, Gaza, Hamra Beirut, El Salvador, every carnage you can come up with.

A little more on Sistani. He called on Badr forces to exert more influence in handling security issues in Iraq.

A beaut. This all comes less than 36 hours after an angry and frustrated US Ambassador Khalilzad criticizes the Shia-led government for allowing the use of militia.

Jaafary's people said we need the Badr forces to keep security and fight the "terrorists".

But the only terrorists today (and yesterday) - besides the ones who blew up the Askariya dome - are the ones who killed up to 26 Sunnis in reprisal attacks.

The terrorists are the ones who burned a Sunni mosque and attacked more than 100 others.

And their names are Badr and Mehdi Army.

Doesn't the timing of this bother anyone?
In the last week alone, we have seen:

Increased US pressure on Jaafary to form a pluralistic government;
A war of words between Khalilzad and Badr Princess Hakim;
Increased media coverage of death squads (a recent report said 1500 highway policemen were suspected of operating death squads);
A report that 400 personnel of the Interior Ministry were under suspecion of involvement in corruption and death squads;
Jaafary's PM job no longer looks secure;
Pressure on Iran for its nuclear program;
Pressure on Iran - Khalilzad blasts Tehran for its role in fomenting violence in Iraq;
Pressure on the UK - Iran says the UK must withdraw from Iraq immediately;
UK Foreign Secretary visits Iraq;
Rice visits Egypt to try again to push for US troops (Cheney's trip last month bombed);
Sadr visits Iran and pledges to defend it in case it is attacked;
Sadr visits Syria, Jordan etcetera etcetera ...;
Sadr says US troops out;
Sadr says federalism rejected ...

And all culminates in the attack on Askariya.

Even the information on the attack is contradictory. Latest version says 10 armed men donning commando outfits (earlier reports said only four) entered the Mosque late on Monday, took five guards hostages, rigged the place to explode, let the five guards go, left during Fajr prayers with the throng of worshippers and boom 6:55am the explosion rocks Sammara, a city the US had repeatedly cited as a success story in clearing it of the "insurgency".

Within two hours, Sunni mosques are on fire.

The best and fastest solution to saving Iraq from the fires of hell is to disband the militia. Why should every party have an armed wing to wreak havoc as it pleases?

I hear people lecture me on how Iraq is a democracy? Really? What democracy in the world has militias representing different political parties?

All Iraqis - Shia, Sunni, Yazidi, Assyrian, Chaldean, Kurd, Turkomen, Arab, Sabaean - must come together and outright reject sectarianism, militia working outside the jurisdiction of the military, and man worship.

We dumped Saddam for a bunch of religious zealots who rule the destinies of their followers?

The US finally realizes that militia will tear Iraq asunder. And it has also realized that trying to disarm the militia will tear Iraq asunder.

Quandary, anyone?

Et voila, the chaos lil George of Crawford sowed in our midst.
