Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) Harith al-Dhari has told Aljazeera that during the time Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Al-Jaafary led the so-called Iraqi government, some 40,000 Sunnis were gunned down, kidnapped, assassinated and murdered.

Al-Dhari implied that death squads which have been active since just before the January 15, 2005 elections were behind most of the killings.

A week ago the AMS also said that between 1300 and 1700 Sunnis alone were killed in the aftermath of the Askariya Shrine bombing. Several hundred Shia were also killed in that period.

In one incident, several dozen Shia and Sunni demonstrators protesting the violence in Iraq were dragged from their cars and executed.
