Documenting US failures in Iraq is a historical imperative

Truth about Iraqis

April 16, 2006

The real war will never make it into the books - Walt Whitman

There are many adages and anecdotes which illustrate that truth is the first casualty of war.

But propaganda and perhaps more dangerously the will to forget are key allies in the white washing of history.

In previous wars, history was written by the victors, it was said. Decades later, historians who challenged the predominant views were called revisionists. In some cases, revisionist historians were called traitors.

The internet, however, has offered itself as a surprising tool to air alternative views and accounts. A young man with a telephone camera can record an incident which challenges the veracity of military briefings to the press by broadcasting it on the WWW within minutes of its occurrence.

History, therefore, as recorded and documented by those living it, has become duly enriched. In this blog, I have said that people like Riverbend, Zeyad, Baghdad Treasure, 24 Steps and others are writing the real history of Iraq as it transpires.

When I first started blogging about eight months ago, I was always questioned why I chose to repeat that the US did not unearth WMDs in Iraq even though it was sure they were there and cited them as principal reasons for invading Iraq.

I was asked why I repeatedly berated the US administration:

* for the fallacy of its Iraq-AlQaida assertions
* for its insisting that Iraq was an imminent threat, a "gathering danger", in the words of lil George of Crawford.

Every assertion, accusation and assumption on the part of the US government, the US military, and the US intelligence community turned out to be false.

Perhaps, ashamedly, people did not want to be reminded of these oversights, instead quipping that:

* "Saddam is taken out"
* "Iraq has freedom"
* "Iraq has elections"
* "Iraqis have ink on their fingers"

The advice was "don't look at the mistakes of the past, focus on the future, how to rebuild Iraq".

However, that is arrogance built on incredible ignorance and a fear of historical analysis.

History is told and studied so that peoples may learn of the details of the past in order to map out their future. It is common sense to study where you went wrong in your blueprint to remodel the patio so the next time you attempt such a venture, you have all the adequate tools and correct information you need.

In some cases, the events are so horrific that peoples insist on retelling the history endlessly "that we may never forget". This is certainly true of such horrors as the Holocaust, the atomic bombing of Japan, the massacres of Rwanda and Bosnia, and so on.

Consequently, that is the purpose of this blog.

To document from a varied pool of local and international sources that:

* The case for invading Iraq was bases on a series of intelligence fallacies and manipulations.
* None of the assertions for invading Iraq has been proven.
* The plan to invade Iraq was hatched in the mid-1990s, not after 2001.
* The plan to invade Iraq was not based on the spreading of democracy.
* The US military has planted propaganda stories in Iraqi and US media.
* The US military has overplayed the importance of foreign terrorists in Iraq.
* Monies (both Iraqi funds and US donations) for reconstruction and rehabilitation in Iraq have been embezzled and stolen.
* There is a growing resistance in Iraq that rejects foreign occupiers on its soil.
* US military personnel have committed hundreds of crimes against humanity in Iraq.
* Iraq's heritage, history, culture have been destroyed as a result of the US invasion.
* The oil industry is decimated.
* Death squads, trained and outfitted by US trainers, routinely and systematically assassinate dozens of people on a nearly daily basis.
* Iran won the sham elections in Iraq.
... And other events ...

In the BBC's History Magazine, noted historian and author of The Pursuit of History John Tosh writes:

The most telling recent indicator of the lack of a critical public history was the Iraq crisis of 2003. Here was a country to which British troops were about to be sent, and about which, the British public knew very little. The least one might have expected was some media coverage of the British Mandate in Iraq after the First World War, when a precarious puppet regime was kept in place by British air power, and when the exploitation of Iraq's oil intensified year by year.

Instead the public was treated to a repetitive charge-sheet against Saddam Hussein; the only historical perspective consisted of a far-fetched analogy with the rise of Hitler.
Tosh is prescient, to say the least. In this writing, he has directly linked the current political situation in Iraq to an earlier debacle some 60-80 years ago.

Perhaps, if others had read of the history of Iraq, the country would not be in the debilitated situation it now faces, with enemies both from within and without conspiring to tear it asunder.

History, does the mind good.

Iraqi inspiration quote FROM Fayrouz: I'm more interested in reading the opinions of Iraqi bloggers than reading the American bloggers analysis of the siuation. Yes, you can add me to the list of your enemies of all I'm concerned.
