You need to decide which side you are really on Mr Sloboda
William Bowles, I'n'I
April 29, 2006
Dear Mr Sloboda,
I've just read your interview on the Newsnight Website and I consider
your remarks gratuitous and extremely misleading not to mention
insulting to the folks at Medialens and to the individuals you mention.
In part, you say:
"They are a pressure group that use aggressive and emotionally
destructive tactics. On the belief that the gravity of the issues
they're dealing with justify that, and also on the belief that that's
somehow effective."
I'd like to know what you base this comment on? Can you give
examples? I follow the Medialens analyses very closely and find them
polite and precise (excessively so given the gravity of the issues).
Your comments about Medialens and the left are nothing more than a
hatchet job which can only serve the interests of the British
government. And in spite of your professed opposition to the invasion
and occupation, which by the way seems to be based on very odd
reasoning, namely
"But one of them was that we feared that there would be a great
number of civilian deaths as a result of the invasion and what
followed."
Clearly the fundamental illegality of the invasion, in contravention
of international law, the UN Charter etc, seems not figure at all.
Why did you not give this as the main reason for your opposition
regardless of the numbers who have died?
And your attack on the Lancet study is just plain wrong! You clearly
haven't read it, or if you have, you simply haven't understood their
methodology. Your comment that
"We have known that the Lancet figures were being extrapolated and
used in erroneous ways for 18 months. As soon as the Lancet was
published, people in the movement started using them in the ways
we're now uncovering."
In what way are you uncovering the errors in the Lancet study, and
who exactly is "extrapolating the study"?
I find it interesting that the BBC gave you such an airing, something
they've failed to do for Medialens and other opponents of the
invasion. Could it be that you serve the interests of the BBC in
promoting the view that 'only' 30,000 or so Iraqis have been killed?
I assert that it is IBC with comments like
"In fact the main target of Media Lens are the supposed liberal, left-
leaning press, as they have a particular agenda with these media
outlets who they see as wolves in sheep's clothing. That they are
pretending to be independent, pretending to have some sort of
liberal, left-wing concern - that they are wittingly or unwittingly
supporting the prevailing Washington/Whitehall consensus."
and
"That is doubly damaging to Iraq Body Count because - we believe -
that some journalists are so fed up with getting these constant
messages from these people that they might be tempted to say, it's
less trouble not to mention IBC so I'll save myself all those
critical emails. And that is what we cannot tolerate - that people
with a political agenda are actually trying to stop the dissemination
of our data in the media."
That serves to promote the government position. You give no examples
where the left is pretending to be independent and if as you assert
Medialens and the like are not "independent", who are we dependent
on? What is the implication of this statement pray tell?
You need to decide which side you are really on Mr Sloboda or is your
'opposition' to the occupation merely based on playing around with
numbers and nothing else?
Go well
William Bowles

about the human condition inside that country," - G.W. Bush at Pentagon Briefing, March 25, 2003
