Iraq stories slowly moved off front pages

If you haven't noticed by now, keep this in mind: Iraq war coverage is very slowly and subtly moving off the front pages of major US news outlets. But this isn't a surprise, is it? Maybe they are done reporting all the "Good News that's fit to print". But, as I mentioned in my blog yesterday, there are nearly two-dozen specific stories of crime, death, kidnapping, firefights, Badr terrorism and US thievery emerging from Iraq each and every day. Consider also that 18 US soldiers have died in Iraq in less than a week. Yet, it seems Americans no longer care...

Iraq stories slowly moved off front pages

Truth About Iraqis

February 8, 2006

If you haven't noticed by now, keep this in mind: Iraq war coverage is very slowly and subtly moving off the front pages of major US news outlets.

But this isn't a surprise, is it? Maybe they are done reporting all the "Good News that's fit to print".

But, as I mentioned in my blog yesterday, there are nearly two-dozen specific stories of crime, death, kidnapping, firefights, Badr terrorism and US thievery emerging from Iraq each and every day.

Consider also that 18 US soldiers have died in Iraq in less than a week. Yet, it seems Americans no longer care.

The New York Times had nothing on its front page. But one funny news item was about Evangelists bringing the weight of God down on Global Warming. Maybe a little less hot air from the pulpit might go a long way ...

The Washington Post does no better. One interesting news item is the Correta Scott King eulogies and ceremonies. No mention that lil Bush was bashed at the ceremonies:

"We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there / But Coretta knew and we knew that there are weapons of misdirection right down here / Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor,"
said Rev. Joseph Lowery.

Almost no mention that former US President Jimmy Carter taught lil Bush a lesson or two about civic history:
"It was difficult for them personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated, and they became the targets of secret government wiretapping and other surveillance,"
Carter said.

Ouch.

Washington Times has a story about the US military blaming federal agencies for not doing enough to win the Iraq war. Nothing else, though.

Dallas Morning News has a story buried in its inner pages about 200 Texans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Newsday? Zilch.

The Charlotte Observer also buried a story on Iraq - but on the humanitarian efforts of US soldiers.

USA Today? Zilch.

If you want any mention of Iraq, you would have to dig into the inner pages. And then even scant reporting of the situation on the ground.

I then compared that with the UK press:

The Independent? Zero.

The Guardian had a story about fewer US troops in Iraq and also commentary about US/UK deception and spin in covering the Iraq war.

I could go on and on with this, from continent to continent but you get the idea.

I believe the media is undergoing self-inflicted systematic desensitization when it comes to Iraq.
