Wednesday 01 September 2004 - US military convoys and Iraqi security forces have come under renewed attacks throughout Iraq, US sources have said.

A US military truck convoy has come under attack on a highway west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Aljazeera has learned.

One of the trucks was completely destroyed after a rocket-propelled grenade hit it.

An Iraqi civilian was killed and three others were injured when an explosive device detonated in Arkhita market in Karrada area in central Baghdad, medical sources told Aljazeera.

The explosion was targeted at a US military patrol as it passed through the area.

US casualties were not known at the time of publication.

Mosul attacks

Four mortar bombs were fired near a government building in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, killing one police officer and wounding 17 civilians, the US military said.

Another police officer was wounded in the attack in downtown Mosul shortly before noon, the US military said in a statement.

Fighters frequently carry out attacks against US troops and security forces in Mosul, 390 km north of Baghdad.

Green Zone targeted

In Baghdad, mortars and rockets were fired at a venue where the interim national assembly was holding its first session.

Five mortar bombs landed just outside the fortified Green Zone compound before the assembly's inaugural meeting.

Two rockets exploded nearby after the session started. At least one civilian was wounded, officials said.

The blasts startled members of the 100-seat assembly, but proceedings were not disrupted.

The assembly's task is to pave the way for elections and oversee the interim government.
