Mosul.
Mossad suspected in murder of Iraqi General who commanded brigade that fired Scuds at "Israel" in 1991.
Unknown armed men assassinated Brigadier General Ahmad al-Mawsuli
of the Army of the Republic of Iraq, the officer who was responsible
for firing the "Scud" missiles that blasted into "Israel" during
1990-1991 war of 30 nations against Iraq.
The Mosul correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported sources as
saying that General al-Mawsuli was at home at the time, having received
death threats from unknown persons in connection with his involvement
in preparing the launchers on which were fired Grad rockets at US bases
in the Mosul area.
The correspondent explained that the assassination was carried out
in an extremely base and underhanded way. An unknown armed assailant
attacked General al-Mawsuli’s house and killed him along with his wife
and daughter. They were unarmed.
General Ahmad al-Maswuli was one of the most highly skilled
officers in the Iraqi army prior to the American invasion. He had been
entrusted with the mission of commanding the rocket brigade that
attacked "Israel" at the start of the Second Gulf War in 1991.
Observers believe that agents of the Mossad, who are present in large
numbers throughout Iraq, thanks to the US occupation, and who carry out
what are known as "dirty operations," are among the most likely
suspects in the murder. Also suspect is Iranian intelligence which is
also believed working to empty Iraq of its scientific and military
experts including hundreds of Iraqi scientists and pilots who took part
in the bombing of Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. The Iranian agencies
are also believed to be targeting activists in the Iraqi Resistance.
